Where it all began...
Roddy McIntosh was born in Turriff, Aberdeenshire. He was educated on the west coast of Scotland. From an early age he was encouraged to work in the garden to make some pocket money. This led to an interest in ‘all things gardening.’
Some years later, Roddy attended The Scottish Agricultural College at Auchencruve and in 1999, graduated with a Diploma in Horticulture and an HND in Landscape Management. He worked for several landscape companies in Glasgow and then Fife.
Kilmany Horticultural Services was established in 2002. Roddy began renting a yard near the village of Kilmany. He now has his own bespoke, themed garden, (which to this day is the hub of his business), ‘recycled’ and ‘grown’ from unwanted/leftover materials…… and a lot of hard work!
The Kilmany Girl
Kilmeny is a family name. We used the local spelling as we are based nearby.
Kilmeny is a Scottish poem written in the 1800’s by James Hogg (‘The Ettrick Shepherd’). Our Kilmany girl is the re-creation of the fine sketching by Jessie King, (one of ‘The Glasgow girls’.) She was an illustrator for the book ‘Kilmeny’ by James Hogg, printed by T and A Constable, Edinburgh. My great-grandmother knew Margaret McDonald, (also one of ‘The Glasgow Girls’), the wife of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The sketching was given to her and has subsequently stayed with our family.
Our Kilmany logo was redesigned by a neighbour, Jon Gill, a very talented artist.
